A part of most people’s childhoods, the Sony Playstation might have been your first console, or maybe you switched over from Microsoft’s Xbox later in life. Either way, you’ve more than likely spent hours and had infinite amounts of fun on this machine.
With classic Playstation games such as Spyro, to elite franchises such as Call of Duty, the Playstation offers them all and the variety of games available on PS just seems to get better and better as the years go on.
With the PS5 coming out by the end of 2020, you might be looking to upgrade. But for now, we still have the PS4 and its potential glitches.
Are you having trouble with error NW-31456-9 on your PS4? We look into how to solve this perplexing issue and what might be causing it below.
PS4 cannot connect to server within time limit NW-31456-9: Why and how to fix it
The letters ‘NW’ in the error code signifies that the Playstation is encountering a network error.
There may be something wrong with the network that isn’t allowing you to connect to the server within the time specified by Sony.
The first port of call to fix this issue would be to change the DNS settings. The Playstation 4 automatically uses the DNS servers that are supplied by your internet provider.
Although it should run fine with the default settings, sometimes the system doesn’t, and that’s when you may have to manually enter new DNS settings.
From the main menu, head over to the internet connection settings and select setting up a ‘custom’ connection.
Click through the default settings until you reach DNS settings. Now, switch to ‘manual’ and enter the following Google DNS servers: 188.8.131.52 and 184.108.40.206.
This should now reconnect your PS4 to the server and restore the system to work as normal.
Solve error code NW-31456-9 by changing the MTU value
If things still aren’t working as they should, then we have a couple more options to run through.
You should make sure there are no existing issues affecting the Playstation Network (PSN) or the game you are trying to play. You can do this by checking the official PSN Network Service Status checking tool. You can also check game servers by looking at the official game websites.
If you are sure that the servers for both PSN and the game are active, then you can continue with the methods outlined below.
This method is a very basic solution. But, before we run through the MTU setting, remember to try rebooting things by firstly restarting your PlayStation 4 console as well as your network router.
Now we’re going to try changing your MTU settings to allow for a more stable, smooth network connection.
- First, you need to press the PlayStation button on your PS4 Controller to get to the Home Screen.
- Select “Settings” and then click on “Network”, “Set Up Internet Connection“ and select “WiFi” or “LAN Cable” based on what kind of network you are using.
- After you have selected a network, you need to select “Custom”. You will see the MTU Settings where you have to set the value to “1473”.

If you are using a WiFi network and the error is not disappearing, you can try using an Ethernet cable instead to resolve the issue.
