Why does Popcorn Time on Chromecast have no sound?

Popcorn Time works by fetching the movies and TV shows from different torrents. These torrents can be in various media formats such as MP4 and MKV for video, and AAC and AC3 for audio.

However, the Google Chromecast does not support MKV format for videos. So, when a torrent is encoded in MKV format, the Chromecast starts to malfunction; thus,  does not output any sound. This is also the reason that you are facing this issue on only some of the TV shows and movies; not all content is in the MKV format. You can see all the media formats that Google Chromecast supports here.

According to VPNMentor: “While the software itself is perfectly legal, storing or downloading digital content on your device can still get you caught up in copyright infringement issues. Nobody wants to face legal trouble just for watching the latest episode of their favourite TV show. But don’t worry! You can still watch your favourite movies and TV shows on Popcorn Time without authorities tailing you. All you need is a good VPN.”

How to fix no sound output in Popcorn Time on Chromecast

As we said above, not all content is in the MKV format; thus, the easiest solution is to find a torrent that is encoded in another format.

First of all, try changing the quality of the TV show or movie you are trying to watch. Popcorn Time uses different torrents when playing different quality videos of the same content. So, while the 1080p version is in MKV format, the 720p version could be in MP4.

To check the format of the content you are trying to play, go to the cache folder in your downloads. When you play a TV show or movie on Popcorn Time, it starts downloading in that cache folder. If that file ends with “.mkv”, then it will be problematic, and the audio will not play.

If you have followed the above steps and are still facing the issue, then make sure that you are running the latest versions of Popcorn Time and Chromecast. Visit the popcorn time website and check to see that you’re running the most up to date version here.

If the issue persists, you can download Popcorn Time on your TV if it is an Android-based smart TV. You can also try using your TV’s screen mirroring feature to mirror Popcorn Time from your smartphone or laptop.
